I was allowed to run this race 2-3 hours after everyone else, starting 21:22. At that point I realized that I would be very alone indeed, so I protected my cell phone in a plastic bag and placed in a back pocket just underneath the night lamp battery carrier, just in case I should have an accident.
I did not realize that the start marker was placed about 60-70m before the start triangle, so my compass bearing was taken from the wrong spot, with the result that I never got the map to fit the terrain I was passing, but after a while I realized that I had to be far to the left, with the result that I stopped trusting my compass! Luckily I hda the big path to catch me so after a while I decided to just go on, find that path and then follow it to the right until I got to the bend. From that bend it was easy to locate the control.
Very easy to #2, then to #3 I decided that I had to take the right-hand path, but due to not trusting my compass I hit the path way too far to the left, otherwise OK.
I did not find the proper way to leave the big labyrinth of fallen trees around and south of #3, so I realized that I ended up too far left to #4, but the route was otherwise OK.
To #5 I intended to bypass most of the medium green to the north but instead I got stuck in really bad slash (thick green stripes would have been correct), and once again lost the direction. I lost a minute or two here compared to a more direct line.
We had two obvious path options to #6, my route should give the easiest attack point. After passing the parking lot the marsh around the pond was extremely wet, I had to lie down and drag myself out of a few bad spots, then I missed the path on the other side. Finally I passed underneath the control without spotting it, losing another minute.
#7 was my best control, good flow and hit it straight on.
Leaving this control my lamp gave up, the 10+ year old battery is probably broken. I turned the lamp off and then on again, then I persuaded it to come back with a minimal map illumination strength which allowed me to finish the race. Up to #8 I just stayed on the edge of the steep hillside, then when the terrain started to turn down I found the path fragment and spotted the flag down to my left.
I found the indistinct path to #9, took a bearing down to #10 and just scrambled through the green stuff to the power line to find the last control.
