Vesterøy hike with friends, checking some paths (2016-06-04)

We were 8 friends together in gorgeous summer conditions in Hvaler, hiking the slabs on the south side of Vesterøy. We had a nice ice cream break at Utgårdskilen, which is the largest fishing harbour in south east Norway, then we took the new hiking path up to Skjelsbuveten. (The path had been modified in one area, where it passes a sheep farm.)

At Skjelsbuveten there used to be an optical telegraph station which was used to warn about attacks from the Swedes or English in the early 1800's. The telegraph was burned down by the Swedes but then it was re-established in time for the 2014 bicentennial of Norway's 1814 constitution.

We had left a couple of cars in Skjelsbu so that we could get back west to Guttormsvauen where we had started the hike.
