Skjærgårdscup 1 (2015-07-13)

Fun social race + BBQ party, my orienteering suffered from bad flow:

1) Lots of hesitation towards this one, should have made a right hand bend and attacked via the knoll with boulders and the smaller knoll beneath it. 15 sec?

2) OK, the only leg that I won today.

3) OK, second best split.

4) Missed the indistinct path junction, lost 15-20 sec.

5) Started going south then changed my mind in order to follow paths. 10-15 sec.

6) Found a nice terrace up through the cliffs, but then I almost slid down near the top and had to hang on to a juniper bush for 5+ seconds before I got onto safe ground. I then missed seeing the path and made a parallel mistake into the control. I lost 1:16 to the best split (Erik Sagvolden) and half a minute to his father Tore who came second.

7) Some hesitation into the control.

8) OK orienteering but lost some time due to slow running.

9) The plan was to follow the long reentrant with a single small cliff, but when I spotted this it also contained a long row of smaller (unmapped) cliffs which led me to believe I was on the next row further west. Lost a full minute here.

10) When I got down to the major path junction Oda was 10-15 m in front of me, when she went left I decided to take the slightly longer right-hand option. As expected this cost me an additional 10-15 m by the time I saw her again near the control.

11) OK, pushing as hard as I could.

12) I considered going right for the path but realized that was too large a detour.

13) The last control was "east of knoll", with the knoll currently submerged by a high tide and the flag tied to the top of a pole. The water was about chest height. :-)
