Same area as I arranged a race a couple of weeks ago, but this time the map was printed in 1:10K instead of 1:7500, with the course printing erasing the map underneath. The result was that I missed several important features.
I have made my own version of the race map here, with the proper overprint mode for the course!
During a few sprints while warming up near the start triangle I took a bad fall, now after the race it is obvious that my left chest, right hand and right leg/ankle took most of the strain, they all hurt now, making it hard to take deep breaths.
1: OK except for a second fall during the last 100 m.
2: Bad direction, lost 30-40 sec.
3: Here I was seduced by better runnability along the faint reentrant while I thought I was entering the control area. Figured it out quickly but lost 44 sec to the winner here.
4: First good leg, first split time win. I never figured out all the unmapped paths but orienteered on the contours until I hit the crossing path near the halfway mark.
5: Another OK leg. I hesitated just west of the control, lost maybe 5 sec.
6: On this leg my race map hid several of the important path sections undeneath the course printing, I lost half a minute to the best split.
7: Here I was really messed up by unmapped paths, but if I had checked my compass more often I should have avoided this big mistake. I was beaten by over 2.5 minutes here.
8 & 9: Typical angry running after such a huge mistake gave me split time wins on both of these controls.
10: I ran this race with Inov8 X-Talon shoes, i.e. without metal studs. The wet slabs on the downhill path were very slippery so I was extra cautious. Including the direction error through the final green and the hesitation south of the control I lost a total of 25 sec to the best split here and dropped down from 2nd to 3rd place in the race.
