Fjelløpet Rauland H55 (03-07-2016)

Very tired legs from the day before, plus a start point that was at 75 m lower altitude than the finish made for a tough day but it was still a lot of fun to experience the JWOC Long map for the first time!

1: OK, except that I hadn't read the clue sheet properly so I stopped when I saw the boulder but not the flag (which was located on the back side). Lost 5-10 sec.

2: Very stupid of me to enter the green stripes halfway, it would have been much faster and easier to follow the indistinct path and go around it. I probably lost ~15 sec here.

3: OK except for at the very end when I expected I could see the spur a little early. When I didn't spot it I first went uphill and then had to go back down again, losing 20 sec.

4: First split time win, probably the optimal route.

5: OK until I passed the small cliffs going into the control and didn't see the flag where I expected it to be. It turned out to be just behind a birch tree even though that tree seemed to be too slim to be able to hide anything. Lost half a minute to the best split.

6: This is where the long uphill slog to the finish started. I lost some time to the fastest runner here but couldn't have done it any faster.

7: OK

8: Obviously a very dangerous control, I considered both going uphill to touch the cliff and going downhill to the edge of the marsh but ended up feeling my way along the hillside until I had gone far enough.

9: Dead easy orienteering uphill in a wet marsh is tough...

10: The flag was located slightly too low, where my track log shows a small red spot but since it could be seen almost from the opposite side of the marsh this didn't matter.

Finish: Uphill all the way, my speed was higher from 9 to 10 than from 10 to the end!
